What is the garden friends program?
Our “garden friends club” service can be tailored to your specific needs or performed upon request. Our most popular lawn care service is our monthly weeding service. Here, our trained crews manually pull weeds and rake over the mulch once a month. Monthly weeding of the beds is typically sufficient to keep weeds at bay. Most importantly, it doesn’t break-the-bank. Our weeding crews service all types of clients, including residential, to commercial, and multifamily.
Standard monthly weeding service for your beds includes the following:
- Hand-pulled large weeds
- Smaller weeds sprayed
- Removal of any weed growing inside a shrub
- Hand pull of unwanted tree saplings
- Spray of gravel and areas where no growth is desired
- Pull expired annuals
- Cut back perennials (late fall)
- Mulch raked over for “fresh” look
- Removal and disposal of all pulled weeds and debris
What is considered a healthy layer of mulch?
First of all what is mulch used for? Mulch is any material that acts as a layer to cover bare soil. When used correctly, mulch can:
- Moderate soil temperatures by keeping soil cooler in the middle of the summer and warmer during harsh winters.
- Retain soil moisture during periods without rain mulch can slow down evaporation of moisture in the soil.
- Suppress weeds by creating a barrier of sunlight, to slow down growth.
- Improve soil fertility by encouraging mycorrhizal fungi and disease suppressing microbes .
Mulch does not make a good soil ammendment, it is simply a layer of organic material added over existing soils. A 2-3″ layer is considered appropriate in most cases. Any more can suffocate plants. If installed too thick around the base of trees and other plants, it can cause rot, nutrient starvation, and plant death.
It is considered best practice to remove old mulch before installing fresh mulch.
Additional Notes:
- Black mulch absorbs heat in the summer so instead of cooling the soil and roots, your mulch does the opposite. Black mulch is also the first to “get dirty” with leaves, needles, pollen, and other debris. Browns tend to hide this more and look newer, longer.
When should i prune my plants?
Good question! Knowing when and how to prune is an important step to keeping a healthy garden.
Perrenials
Perrenials are generally cut back in late fall or early spring. Grasses should be cut close to the ground while butterfly bushes and sage should be cut back to about 4″ tall. This will help produce strong, new stems and the best flower display.
Broad-leafed Evergreens
Broad-leafed evergreens should be pruned in the early spring and any winter damaged foilage should be removed at the same time. In the early summer, as new growth begins, hedge and shape as desired. It is always considered best practice to thin the bush to prevent the outer foliage from becoming too thick.
Flowers
Flowers such as hydrangeas and roses which are summer blooming should be cut back as desired while removing dead, damaged, or crowded stems in the early spring. Summer-blooming buds on trees, shrubs, and vines develop on new growth. Spring fertilization will maximize the size and number of flowers.
Sappy Trees
Sappy trees such as maples, birches, dogwoods, walnuts, and elms produce sticky sap in the winter and spring so it is reccomended to hold off pruning untill summer or fall.
Spring Flowering Shrubs
Spring flowering shrubs such as forsynthia, rhododendron, and lilac should be pruned and shaped for size in the early summer, after flowering. These plants grow buds for next years flowers in the summer so if pruning is delayed, you may sacrifice next years flowers. Deadheading is another reccomended practice that will direct growth into buds versus seeds.
Deciduous Trees and Evergreens
Deciduous Trees and Evergreens should be pruned in the winter, as the threat of insects and disease is much lower. You can also see the framework of deciduous trees much easier without its leaves. Start by removing any dead, damaged, crossed, or hazardous limbs.
